In the realms of internet hype, we often have to deal with 'dodgy' casting rumors, but when they come from a pretty reliable source (Entertainment Weekly) sometimes it's better to sit up and take notice.
EW has reported that ROBERT DOWNEY JR is eying up the possible lead in Guy Richie's upcoming adaptation of SHERLOCK HOLMES.
The upcoming adaptation is based on Lionel Wigrams soon-to-be-released graphic novel as opposed to the works of Arthur Conan Doyle, and promises to be a more 'adventurous' and 'modern' take on the master detective.
Some will undoubtedly says that casting an American in what is a quintessential ENGLISH role is sacrilege, but then it's not as if we haven't been here before is it?
Listing previous actors who have played the part is like rolling off a who's who of world cinema, with names such as Ian Richardson (Scottish), Richard Roxburgh (Australian) and Christopher Plummer (Canadian) on the list, it's safe to say that this isn't new ground.
Besides, Downey Jr has MORE than proved himself as a perfectly capable actor, able to play a myriad of different roles to perfection, the English Super Sleuth shouldn't prove to be too much of a challenge.
The only problem I can see is his busy schedule. With an imminent IRON MAN sequel to come, and also a possible role as HUGH HEFFNER, he may prove to be unavailable for quite some time.
